How to Prepare Your Family for Portrait Day

Published August 11, 2026

Wrangling outfits, feelings, and little ones on the same morning can feel like a lot. The truth is, a beautiful portrait day is mostly decided in the days before it. Here is how to arrive relaxed, so all you have to do on session day is enjoy your family.

Plan the wardrobe early, and together

Choose your outfits a week or more ahead, not the night before. Coordinated is the goal, not matching — think tones that live well together rather than identical shirts. Lay everything out in one place, try it all on, and let the kids have a small say in what they wear. A child who feels good in an outfit photographs like one.

If you are unsure where to begin, bring your questions to me. Every session is thoughtfully styled, and I am happy to guide your palette so your family looks polished on the wall of your home.

Schedule around your youngest

The best time for your session is whenever your smallest family member is at their sweetest. For babies and toddlers, that usually means after a good nap and a full tummy. When we plan your session, tell me about nap times and school pickups — we will build the day around them, whether we photograph in the studio, on location, or somewhere special to you.

Feed everyone first

Hungry children and hungry husbands have remarkably similar dispositions on camera. Serve a real meal before you leave, and tuck a few tidy snacks in the car for afterward. Save anything sticky or brightly colored for once the portraits are finished.

Talk it up, but keep it light

In the days before, mention the session the way you would a fun outing, not an obligation. Children take their cues from you. If portrait day sounds like something delightful is coming, they arrive curious and open. There is no need to rehearse smiles or practice poses — guiding your family into natural, flattering moments is my job, not yours.

Give the reluctant one some grace

Nearly every family has one member who would rather be anywhere else, and that is perfectly fine. Do not spend the car ride negotiating. Once we begin, sessions feel far more like connection and play than posing, and the most reluctant participant is often the first to relax. I have seen it happen more times than I can count.

Build margin into the morning

Whatever time you plan to leave, plan to be ready thirty minutes earlier. That cushion is where the calm lives. Iron clothes the night before, load the car ahead of time, and let the morning unfold gently rather than in a rush that follows you into your first frames.

Come as you actually are

The portraits families treasure most are rarely the ones where everyone held a perfect smile. They are the ones where Daddy made someone giggle, where a toddler reached for Mama, where your people leaned into each other the way they do at home. Release the pressure of perfect. Your family, exactly as it is in this season, is the art.

Let me handle the rest

From styling guidance to gentle direction on the day, your only responsibility is to show up and be together — immediate family, extended family, everyone you love is warmly welcomed. If you are ready to plan a family session in Douglasville or anywhere the road takes us, I would be honored to create with you.
