The Maternity Session Timeline: When to Schedule

Published August 19, 2026

Of all the questions expecting mothers ask me, this one comes first: when should I book my maternity session? Pregnancy moves quickly, and the loveliest window for portraits is shorter than most mamas expect. Here is the timeline I walk every client through, so you can plan with confidence.

Reserve your date in your second trimester

The best time to book is earlier than you might think. I encourage mothers to reserve their session date during the second trimester, once you're feeling more like yourself and the excitement is settling in. Booking early means your preferred date is protected, and it gives us unhurried time to plan your styling, your sets, and every detail of your experience.

When the portraits actually happen

While you book in the second trimester, the session itself typically takes place a bit later, when your bump is beautifully rounded and you're still moving comfortably. For most mothers, that sweet spot arrives in the early weeks of the third trimester. Every pregnancy is its own story, though, and we'll talk through what feels right for your body and your due date when you reserve.

Why the window matters

Wait too long, and you may find yourself too tired, too swollen, or simply too close to delivery to enjoy being celebrated. Come too early, and the silhouette you're hoping to honor hasn't fully arrived. Scheduling ahead lets us land gracefully in between, so you feel radiant rather than rushed.

Leave time for the client closet

One of the joys of your session is beginning in the couture client closet — selecting the gown, accessories, and set that feel most like you. When you book ahead, we have time to plan your looks thoughtfully instead of scrambling at the last minute. If you'd like to arrange your own hair and makeup, planning ahead helps there too, as it isn't included in the session.

Expecting multiples or measuring ahead

If you're carrying twins, or your doctor tells you baby is measuring ahead of schedule, plan to be photographed a few weeks earlier than you otherwise would. Your comfort comes first, always, and an earlier session simply means we capture you at your best.

Think ahead to newborn portraits, too

Many mothers pair their maternity session with newborn portraits, and the timing there is even more delicate. Newborns are ideally photographed between five and fifteen days new, which means those dates are reserved in your final trimester, before baby arrives. If a newborn session is on your heart, mention it when you book your maternity date and we'll plan both chapters together.

How booking works

Reserving your date is simple: a $100 non-refundable retainer holds your session day, with the balance due when we create together. From there, everything is guided — your consultation, your styling, and a session designed entirely around you, in-studio, on location, or at a destination of your dreams.

This season deserves to be honored

You will only be this version of yourself for a little while. Let's make certain she is remembered beautifully. If you're expecting, I would be honored to celebrate you.
